FEBRUARY MEETING REPORT
AN APOLOGY
The Forest's Political Farce: An Apology
Why are Labour and Independents Proping Up a Failing Green Cabinet?
In a display of political theatre that would be comical if it weren't so damaging to our district, last night's Forest of Dean District Council meeting saw the Green administration spend over an hour systematically blaming the Labour Party for the council's mounting failures in housing delivery and local plan madness.
Yet, in a move that defies logic, and yet was all too predictable, the four Labour councillors and an Independent continue to shore up this undemocratic and damaging administration.
The Blame Game
The Green cabinet, led by Councillor Adrian Birch, has come under heavy fire for its "undemocratic" handling of the Revised Draft Local Plan, which proposes two controversial new towns and 13,200 new homes. Rather than taking responsibility for these contentious blueprints, cabinet members spent the session pointing fingers at Labour policies and threatening Councillors with the release of names, to the waiting press. of those who dared not attend one of their Green Party Local Plan instructional briefings, as if they had a release of the Epstein files to share.
A House Divided
The most baffling aspect of this situation is the internal contradiction within the opposition groups:
The Independent Irony: Independent Councillor John Francis tabled a motion of no confidence in the Green leadership. Why, then, are other members of the same group continuing to support the very administration their colleague is trying to depose? And it wasn't JUST the member who abstained. We know at whose behest he acted, and it stinks.
The Labour Paradox: Why did four Labour councillors sit through an hour of their own party being trashed, only to vote to keep those same Green members in power?
Back Door Deals or Political Suicide?
One has to ask: what has been promised behind closed doors? This "confidence and supply" arrangement is beginning to look less like a stable coalition and more like a desperate attempt to cling to relevance at any cost.
By refusing to back the motion of no confidence, these Labour and Independent councillors have done more than just save the Greens—they have severely damaged their own reputations. In the eyes of many voters, they are now complicit in a housing plan that residents have branded "absolute madness".
Repeated statements of how you always vote and act in support of those you represent are valid for so long until it becomes clear that your actions suggest otherwise.
The Outcome
There is only one winner, and that's Reform UK.
By appearing weak, divided, and more interested in protecting their positions than standing up for the Forest, the Council is rolling out the red carpet for a Reform landslide in the next council elections.
The Greens, so inept and so in love with the sound of their own smugness, are without doubt entering the last year of their desperate period of power.
The fanatics may still believe, but the public has worked them out.
Last night, there were those among their number who stated that they needed to be in power, needed to be there to educate the children of the Forest about its fauna and flora, because Forest parents and grandparents were not passing that history down to the kids, who sit and play on Xbox all day.
Those of us who are the "other" Independents know we can't match the efforts and swell of support that Reform has, and there will still be the fanaticism of the Greens. An Independent abstaining in a motion of no confidence put by a member of his own group damages the very concept of Independent politicians in the eyes of the public to such an extent that it may well mark the demise of Independent politicians representing the Forest of Dean.
And for what? We have our suspicions, but can't say here, but we know that he was led by the nose.
The people of the Forest of Dean deserve an administration that takes responsibility, not one that survives on the life support of the very people it insults. It's time for our councillors to stop the "back door deals" and start listening to the residents who are crying "shame on you" from the public gallery. It is a shame that this, the last opportunity for change, has passed.
And the biggest losers?
Well, that's the people of the Forest of Dean , the people of Churcham and Glynchbrook.
It's a sad day, it's the end for Independent Councillors, and the fact that we couldn't support the brilliant people of the Forest means we have failed, we have all failed.
And for that we are sorry,
.
